The Big Pink deliver what is possibly the best cover ever

The.Big.Pink. Still the words of my week.
I know you’ve heard me gush before and I have no doubt you’ll be hearing me gush so much more beyond this. But, seriously, isn’t this like the best thing ever?!
I’ve already been blown well and truly away by The Big Pink’s penchant for covering songs that people wouldn’t even dream of touching for fear of fucking them up and being hated forever. Making each and everyone more superb than the original and filling them with raw emotional beauty. But, c’mon! The Big Pink covering Beyonce?! I’ve reached a state of nirvana right here!
So, Sunday saw me dragging my sick self away from bed to The Metro to catch their first ever show in le city de sin.
The room was full (but surprisingly not sold out, seriously, what is wrong with people?!), with a slightly nervous vibe as everybody patiently waited for the band of the moment to take the stage, all secretly hoping they’ll live up to all our expectations and not shatter our hearts.
Taking the stage, all shy in greeting and avoidant of crowd eye contact before they went up in a thick cloud of discordant guitars and pulsing beats. The crowd’s smiles grew in confidence as they realised they weren’t here to let us down, and let us down, they didn’t.
With a set so chocked full of highlights, it was hard to pin point just one moment. But skimming along the top would have to be favourites ‘Too Young to Love’, a blistering version of ‘Velvet’ which took things well into the red; a fantastic cover of Otis Redding’s ‘These Arms of Mine’, which saw Furze’s vocals finally taking centre-stage tonight and warming even the coldest of hearts. As the crowd stood there still trying to shake off the goosebumps, Furze, Cordell and co pulled the very last trick from their hat and hit us sharply with a perfect version of Dominos before exiting the stage.
With that over, it was off to World Bar to have a drinks and dance away the early hours of Monday morning, where the band jumped up and took the decks for one of the best hour set I’ve seen for quite some time. When Furze’s colourful musical past including a stint with Digital Hardcore pioneer and founding Atari Teenage Riot member, (Sir) Alec Empire. It came as no surprise that his tastes would be full, varied and hit all the right notes and that it did!
But being a Monday and with me being sick still, I had to take my tired feet and sick head home, but not before getting them to sign a few posters to giveaway!
I have a few, so don’t be shy. To be in the running to win one, just send me your favourite cover from The Big Pink and why, remember, there aren’t any wrong answers! J

Goldfrapp do it all again
3/9/2010 12:02:20 PM
|
|
In a flash of hot pink smoke and 80s inspired imagery, Goldfrapp drop their new clip ‘Rocket’, the first single from their fifth studio album ‘Head First’, set for release on March 19.
Taking a synthsational turn back to the 80s, it’s an addictively simple pop tune. However, I’m still not sure the section of the 80s that inspired them most during the making of this was the part we’d all most like to remember. Think sweatbands, legwarmers and leotards over tights as opposed to lace gloves and big shoulders.
The clip is filled with colour and actually kinda feels like a cross between something we would have expected Kylie to do (circa Body Language) and a choreographed piece from Olivia Newton John from her time reigning over cheeseville!
Oh, and how could I possibly forget the taped-up hostage in her passenger seat? Bringing back the femme fatale not seen since Nina Perrson’s most notable clip fatale to date in The Cardigans’ My Favourite Game and Gwen Stefani in No Doubt- It’s My Life.
I’m still perched firmly on the fence between liking the clip and finding the cheese pop of ‘Rocket’ itself most annoying. From everything the band promised to be at the beginning with Felt Mountain and Black Cherry, to this? I don’t heart it at all! L

The Big Pink announce exclusive Sydney afterparty
3/5/2010 1:45:30 AM
|
|
Okay, so having fallen well and truly under spell of UK duo The Big Pink over the last year as Dominos took over the heads and hearts of every dancefloor worth treading on in 2009. Then discovering their cover of The Cure’s Love Song (done for an NME Cure covers compilation), was one of the most well-executed, timeless pieces of heartbreaking perfection I’d ever heard.
You can imagine the pure teenage hysteria that ensued as Handsome Tours announced they’d be doing the honours of bringing them out to our shores for the first time, late last year.
Now after patiently marking down the sleeps left on my calendar, the time has finally come for their much anticipated first Sydney show on Sunday. If that wasn’t already enough excitement to take in, they’ve also just announced an uber-exclusive post show DJ set at World Bar.
To make sure you’re one of the lucky 200 to trash your way well-into your Monday as the guys hijack the decks along with SVU (of Lost Valentinos), Chicks Who Love Guns, Warhorse, Alvin from Saint Augustine Academy and The Salvagers, you must RSVP to the FB event, found here:

Don’t say you weren’t warned!
The Big Pink in Sydney: Sunday March 7 – The Metro Theatre, then on to World Bar for some exclusive and cheap post-show love!

Delphic to tour Down Under
2/18/2010 12:55:09 PM
|
|
After delivering the first must-have record of the decade with their debut slab of electronic indie pop perfection 'Acolyte' (which had produced du jour Ewan Pearson at the helms, no less).
Manchester four-piece Delphic have just announced that they'll making their maiden voyage to visit us next month. We would have bid adieu to summer by then, but they're sure to be extending the heat for an extra week, as they flick by:
The Hi-Fi Bar, Brisbane- Thursday March 25
with Bag Raiders (in dj mode) & Matt Van Schie
The Prince Bandroom, Melbourne- Friday March 26
with Doom + Hoodrat & Matt Van Schie
The Beach Road Hotel, Sydney- Saturday March 27
with Doom + Hoodrat & Matt Van Schie
Oxford Art Factory, Sydney- Sunday March 28
with Matt Van Schie, Circle Pit & Modular DJs
Tickets are cheap, so be sure to get in fast to avoid crying alone in your room for the next six months, wondering why you were the only one NOT 'there when Delphic first toured to Australia and played to a blissfully intimate crowd'!
Modular are also bearing late xmas-style gift vibes for those who haven't yet got their hands on Acolyte, offering a super-cheap $15 download of the album with any ticket purchase.
This year just keeps getting better, pinch me...quick!

Prepare the Playground, the Kids Are Coming

So the summer festival season is well underway and the list of upcoming festivals is still continuing to grow.
With the addition of the iconic dance music brand Creamfields set to be launched on our shores this year.
The first of the line up has just been released and for what it is, doesn't fail to disappoint me thus far. Along in the first announcement came: The Bloody Beetroots with Death Crew 77 their six-piece live band, Steve Angelo, MSTRKRFT, Ferry Corsten, LMFAO, Dave Clarke, Marco V, Green Velvet, Dirty South (fresh from Coachella 2010), Kid Sister, Joris Voorn, Lifelike, Riva Star, Tommie Sunshine, Bingo Players, Filo & Perry, Zoo Players and Oh Snap! Okay, so it's not the worst line up in the world, but considering Crea, fields is one of the biggest brands in the world and the reach they have after ruling it in the UK year after amazing year, it sure is the weakest first announcement line up of the year!
I mean, where's Hot Chip? Where's Club 75 (the Cassius, Ed Banger crew for those not up to scratch), where's Delphic, Tiga???
One of the summer festivals not on the disappointing side however is the upcoming Playground Weekender set to take place on the NSW East-Coast next weekend. With a finger-licking line up, consisting of The Polyphonic Spree, Orbital, Lupe Fiasco, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Ewan Pearson, OK GO, The Cribs, Jamie Lidell, Steve Lawler, British Sea Power, James Lavelle, bluejuice, Lost Valentinos, Prins Thomas, Pivot et al.
I look forward to bringing you the best of the line up in the lead up to the festival, with an exciting competition to be announced if you still haven't gotten your act together in the way of tickets just yet, so be sure to keep your eye firmly-trained to this spot for the next week for fresh interviews and news on the artists...sans line-up cancellations, unlike Good Vibes losing their vibe late this week!
First cab off the ranks comes courtesy of these guys, so keep an eye on the dial!
This has to be one of the most addictive singles of the year so far!

BDO, the last blast
2/1/2010 11:57:23 PM
|
|
Okay, so once again the annual BDO season has blown through the country at lightening speed, to rock and shock record numbers of sold out Australian crowds. Now as most of you brush off the remaining dust from your skin and wait until the sunburn subsides, I'm already planning the next festival adventures to bring you...
Good Vibrations in Sydney and Playground Weekender are the first cabs off the rank in case you were wondering. But for now I couldn't help leaving you with some photo happy moments from the Melbourne BDO, where I was lucky enough to be looking after the wonderful 7pm Project team, as they got their crowd shots throughout the day and interviewed Powderfinger for the following night's show.
I also found the time to grab a sneaky pose from Faris Horror to make all melt, as he and The Scare's Sam made their way back from catching The Volta stageside.
But one of the funniest memories I get to take from this tour I'd have to say, was walking to the Fear Factory trailer, to check if they were ready for the Music Feeds crew to come in and do their interview...only to find the band all singing along whole-heartedly to The Black Eyed Peas' -I Gotta Feeling, which then became an ongoing joke over the next week. So I thought I would leave you with this clip to imagine if you can...

Frances in Awe

With day one of the Sydney Big Day Out all wrapped up and the harsh 40 degree heat set to rise another few degrees for day two...I wasn't quite sure if I could make it through, so thankfully Nik Valentino (of Lost Valentinos) took on camera duties as my blog guest to take you through his BDO experience (chill still, that blog will be up later tonight!)
But after the storm blew through and cooled things down (we won't mention the heartbreak of having The Horrors rained off mid-set) , I had the camera back in hand to enjoy to stand slack-jawed side of stage for The Mars Volta's set.
I must admit that I have been a fan of their recorded work since De-Loused in the Comatorium. But having caught Cedric and Omar live (three times in as many days, for those of you keeping score!) when they came out to Australia in their previous incarnation, ATDI (I can't even utter the name in full, the memory of what we lost is still far it's too heartbreaking), I just couldn't bring myself to do it.
So as 7pm hit and sun begun to set over the still damp sold-out crowd, I grabbed my drink and made my way stage-side. From this point I can’t really put into words what happened next. All I can remember is the size of my smile, the goosebumps on my arms, the feeling of air in my eyes…for fear of blinking and missing even a second of one of the most magic jams we’ll experience in our lives.
I can’t believe what a fool I have left it so long! Not believing that the undeniable je ne sais quoi of the Bixler/Rodriguez combo could be translated just as intensely into their next foray proved to be the most sacrilege things I’ve ever done in my life.
There’s just something about their openness and easiness with eachother that the others can’t help but vibe into, there wasn’t one wasted moment in their set, nor was there one member you couldn’t take your eyes off, the whole performance as a whole was but an hour of perfection. A faultless moment in time, that will go down as one of our best rock and roll experiences. But after all these years I still find it almost impossible to catch any of it on camera, like that night at the Metro a decade ago, what they have is a little harder to capture in one clear snapshot, it’s like the moment refuses to be trapped in time.
But I still can’t wait to try it again in Melbourne tomorrow!

Big Day Out Sydney- Day One Highlights Continue
1/25/2010 2:27:54 AM
|
|
One of the most notable missions of the day was to escourt competition winners stageside for Dizzee Rascals phenomenal mainstage set.
Seeing a crowd of that size now taking up every square inch of the empty grass I photographed earlier in the day, along the grandstands now crammed like sardine cans, all singing and swaying along (like a human sea), under Dizzee's spell was almost hypnotic
and moving along was impossible to resist!
If you're yet to catch the Big Day Out in your neck of the woods, you must make sure this set sits at the top of your early mainstage lists, it'll be the pinnacle part of your afternoon!
DIZZEE OR DIE!
