Absolut Visionary Series 10/28/2009 9:19:31 AM
It's pretty hard to avoid brand sponsored content online these days but it's refreshing to see when people actually do it well. Absolut vodka have teamed up with The FADER mag to put together a series of podcasts inspired by the words Doing Things Differently Leads to Something Exceptional. Each word has been given a differently visual interpretation by director Rupert Sanders and has been used as inspiration for The FADER's crate digging. There are 6 podcasts in the series for your downloading pleasure. Nice.

Isn't this a MASSIVE rip off of what Sagmeister has been doing for the last 10 years or so? http://www.fastcompany.com/blog/cliff-kuang/design-innovation/absolut-doh

I don't know Ghostbusta. Sure there are similarities in the use of experimental typography and even in the style but I don't think it's fair to say that Sagmeister (although a freaking genius) can claim to own all forms of experimental type. He wasn't the first and he won't be the last. There's obviously inspiration taken from his work but I think they've brought their own interpretation of the style to this ad, particularly in the form of moving image. There's a fair bit of bitching about this going on around the traps at the moment... I'm into it but each to their own I guess.

I'm not saying that it is bad. I just think the similarities of combining the experimental typography and aspirational slogan are too great. It's still nicely done, but it feels too close to Sagmeister. I'm also not claiming that Sagmeister owns this particular method, but he is probably the most well know protagonist.

Luke Lucas - I'm not really sure how to classify this blog but I hope to share with you a few of things that I find interesting, amusing and inspiring. As an editor and head designer of the Lifelounge family, I'm semi obsessed with all things typography, design and art. Enjoy.
