I Believe In You, Your Magic Is Real By: Dimitri Kalagas

In a world of ‘indietronica’ more often than not populated by self indulgent shoegazers (not always a bad thing) it is extremely rare to come across an artist who exudes such a refreshingly positive outlook as Jona Bechtolt aka Yacht. One half of The Blow, Bechtolt comes armed with a truck load of pop sensibility as well as wealth of production values, resulting in an album that focuses less on hook-laden songwriting and more on the art of production itself. Due in part to this approach, I Believe in You, Your Magic is Real is a playful, almost wistful collection of tracks that floats in and out of your consciousness, showing off intricately pieced together compositions that range between the sugary ‘See A Penny (Pick It Up)’, reminiscent of recent Herbert, to the scarily familiar synth builds of ‘Platinum’ and ‘It’s All The Same Price’. However, Yacht’s weaknesses stem from the same place as his strengths. With most of the emphasis being placed on the production rather than the songwriting, the album has the potential to come across as a slightly hollow affair. Yet it still manages to shine with genuine creativity and contains enough optimism to keep even the harshest cynic smiling.
