An introduction to 1980s Hong Kong action cinema
Nov 17, 2009 at 12:34
While most people were enjoying blockbusters from Schwarzenegger and Stallone back in the 80s, some of the best action movies of the era were actually coming out of a small British colony in Asia.
Despite its tiny landmass, Hong Kong had a burgeoning film industry in the 80s and a powerful lust for cinematic violence. It also had a visionary director in John Woo and a natural lead in Chow Yun Fat. Combining epic body counts and gun-play with tales of honour and betrayal, the pair helped create a new template for action movies – something they liked to call ‘heroic bloodshed’.
A Better Tomorrow
(1986) got the ball rolling and was followed by classics like
The Killer
(1989) and
Hardboiled
(1992).
With Hong Kong being ‘returned’ to China in 1997 and Hollywood a-calling, most of the people involved in the local industry packed up and left for the US in the early 90s. That left the door open for South Korea to take over in the ULTRA VIOLENCE stakes. But that’s another update altogether...

That Arnie one was AWESOME!!! :D :D :D No no for real, I used to *live* for HK cinema during High School. Staying up late watching them on SBS, ahhh, such fond memories... I haven't even seen Commando yet. Damn Arnie looks buff though, I can't wait for gym tomorrow ^_^ - Jake OXOXOXO

You haven't seen Commando? Dude! So many classics lines: "He's dead tired," "I had to let me him go," etc, etc.
