The 8-bit wonderland of Atari 2600 game box art

Truth be told, the ATARI 2600 was the only gaming console I ever owned as a kid. One thing I remember in vivid detail was the excitement I used to get from the illustrated cover art on the game packaging. In retrospect the games themselves massively under delivered. The amazing illustrative montages promised fantasy worlds of robots, space ships, giant centipedes and more but the 8 bit, 1.19 MHz reality didn't even come close... still I don't remember ever being disappointed.

Below is a collection of scans from Atari game boxes back in the day. The illustrations still blow me away.

I love how the Video Chess guy is surrounded my futuristic zip zaps but is still bored witless.

And Memory Match looks like an ad for RSVP.

I will have to have a dig around but I found a site where you can download the vector versions of the artwork that went on the side of the arcade machines. When I found it I jizzed in my pants... stay tuned...

I remember getting really high in Wizard of War to a level called 'The Pit'. There was nowhere to hide and the monsters moved like laser beams on my AWA TV screen. No time for vegemite and cheese that day.
