South Bronx during the 80s and 90s by Ricky Flores

Having grown up in the South Bronx during the 80s, Ricky Flores began to photograph his life in the city. His images are partly candid friend images and partly of the wider Puerto Rican community at a vibrant time in South Bronx history. Many of the people featured in these early photographs have since lost their lives to drugs, AIDS and senseless violent crimes. Ricky's photographs offer incredible insight into the lives of those in the South Bronx during what he claims is the was the systematic destruction of an entire community. Amazing images.

Since then Ficky Flores has gone on to be a leading photojournalist with works published in the Village Voice and the New York Times. He currently works for The Journal news and sits on the advisory board of En FOco Inc (a non - profit organisation the seeks to promote cultual diversit in photography)

That time and place looked like loads of fun until I read the bit about pretty much everyone in those shots died violently or from drugs or AIDS. Massive downer. Great shots though.

Great photos. But yeah, I imagine there was some real grimey shit going on behind the scenes in these communities back in the early 80s.
