Sega does what Nintendon’t

Classic videogame ads Sep 09, 2009 at 10:35
Video-game ads these days fall into two distinct categories. They’re either ridiculously arty and pretentious (Gears of War, Assassin’s Creed) or achingly lifestyle (anything involving Nintendo). What you definitely won’t see are fat kids, nerds, fat nerds rapping, or 14-year-old sad sacks jerking off into sports socks. Videogames are for adults, see.

Things were decidedly geekier (and weirder) back in the 80s and 90s. Since the games were all pitched at kids locked away in their bedrooms NOT MAKING FRIENDS, the ads reflected that. In other words, all the stuff we mentioned above in our ‘Don’t List’ was featured prominently. With an added dose of cross dressing and name calling for good measure.

Legend of Zelda Dance off (Japan):

Legend of Zelda Rap:

Sega Megadrive / Genesis:

NES Powerglove:

Cross dressing Nintendo Ad:

Pole Position (Atari):

Centipede (Atari):

Game Gear (Sega)

Assassin’s Creed (2008):

Gears of War (2007):

I am officially quitting the advertising industry. Creativity clearly peaked in 1986 with the Zelda rap and we have no hope of ever coming close to its genius.

They had me at "Whoaaaa! Nice graphics! I'd like to get my hands on that game."

nothing beats the Pole Position ad... "You look like a real jerk!", "Well I am a corporate executive..."
