Film review Mar 09, 2009 at 08:07
For those of you who have somehow managed to dodge the hype, Notorious is a film on the colourful and controversial life of one of the most talented rappers of all time, Notorious B.I.G.  It takes us on a journey through the big man’s life, from a kid hustling in 1980s crack-infested Brooklyn to the recognition of his MC talent, eventual super stardom and suspicious death in the 90s.

The film touches on the East Coast / West Coast rivalry of the time andnotorious (bah!) conflict between Tupac and Biggie but one can’t help but feelthe way this was represented had a bit of a pro-Bad Boy slant to it. Considering that Diddy was the executive producer of the project it’seasy to see why. In saying that, if like me, you’re a fan of 90s EastCoast hip hop and Biggie’s flow, it’s hard not to dig the shit out thisfilm for the soundtrack and nostalgic value alone.

On a performance level, it’s worth noting Christopher Wallace Jr (real life son to Biggie and Faith Evans) as a convincing young Christopher Wallace and Jamal Woolard’s performance as the older Notorious is, in a word, solid. Although the real Lil Kim disputes the way she’s been represented in the film, the smoking hot Naturi Naughton does a great job of her scripted portrayal also.

To help promote the movie launch Lifelounge is running a comp in ourforums with turntables, home theatres systems and more audio goodies upfor grabs... check out the Lifelounge x Notorious B.I.G. Competition

As I side note, I still get shivers when I hear this rhyme... the dude was so fucking good. Respect.

I love Notorious B.I.G.! Finally he is gets the kudos he deserves and I believe this film is helping get the limelight he finally deserves here in Australia. For far too long its all been about Tupac and he has greatly overshadowed B.I.G. posthumourously but as people who watch this film can tell, B.I.G. was just as prolific if not better!!

There was definitely the Tupac kids and the Biggie kids in high school... Biggie was on the side of the dudes who skated and did graffiti and got the train... Tupac seemed to be for the dudes who liked to fight, carried knives, sold drugs and got the bus... where I grew up anyhow...

I used to get a lift in then sometimes catch the tram or train then a bus. I liked Guns n Roses.

There's definitely a social divide between Tupac and Biggie fans. I always though of Tupac fans as illiterate, pikey, drug dealers. Biggie fans were more about the girls.

I guess I was in the surfer/grunge group. We actually had a healthy lifestyle but were angry at the world...

I was a wigger. But I would listen to everything from Wu Tang Clan to Tupac and Warren G to De la Soul. Angry... So, angry...
