Kings Way – The Beginnings of Australian Graffiti
<< Back
Melbourne 1983–93 Jun 10, 2009 at 11:45
Kings Way is, without a doubt, the most significant piece of literature on the beginnings of Australian and in particular Melbourne's graffiti culture that has ever been produced. It acts as a bible, chronicle and visual encyclopaedia of the evolution and rise of this influential subculture through 80s and early 90s and pays tribute to Melbourne's early writers and crews that helped build their city's international reputation as a graffiti style capital.

Mapping the progression of styles, influences and key players in the graf scene the attention to detail is unmatched. Over the last two years co-authors and Australian graffiti veterans Duro Cubrilo, Martin Harvey and Karl Stamer have painstakingly crafted Kings Way into a 384 page book featuring over 12 hundred full-colour images with contributions by over 60 people including the likes of Bathy, Chose, Duel, Duet, Krisy, Merda, New2, Paris, Peril, Puzle, Ransom and Ron the Train Driver. A serious task.

As well as the regular edition of the book which will be available from July 1st, 2009 for AUD$64.99 via Melbourne University Press and all good book stores, the guys will also be releasing 200 hand-numbered limited edition versions of the book which feature a protective slipcase box, foil detail, unique end paper design and images and are each individually signed by the authors. Lifelounge will be stocking the limited edition version so we'll keep you posted on its release.

Click on the thumbnails to the right of this post to see samples from the book and if you're in Melbourne on July 18th the book's official launch will be held at the Australian Center for the Moving Image (ACMI). Check the Kings Way Blog for updates and more info.

This is absolutely brilliant. The first time I heard about this was three years ago. To see that it is done now is a testament to the creators dedication and passion the the documentation and preservation of this scene. Maximum respect. I look forward to purchasing a copy and getting it signed ;)

I am very interested in this. I took photos from the Adelaide scene from 93 onwards so that will be interesting to compare the contribution from SA to the development of the Australian graffiti scene which has always been amazing. Also Bris Vegas had such an influence with Hype magazine and the connection to Sydney etc. then there was always Perth pushing things. As a closing note SLAM is absolutely fucken dope and deserves a mention. Look forward to seeing Melbourne history cause it really remained a bit of a mystery in the beginnings of publishing Aussie graff.
