I could be wrong, but the girl who came forward with the Matthew Johns story never said the sex was non-consensual. Although she probably didn't expect the audience. Not defending them. She consented to two not six is the issue, but when you are surrounded by that many men like that, whatchagonnado? It's just a mess, a mess I tell you. Zero tolerance IS the only way. If a young kid, who could potentially be the best player in the code ever, and everyone knows it, does one stupid thing, and he receives a lifetime ban from the sport on a professional level, what message will that send to the rest of the up and coming players? It will state in very, very clear terms that yes, you have to be super human and have to perform on field, and off field. You do not have the luxury of being a superstar on field, and getting away with rape off field. It would be very, very sad to lose some of the countries most talent players, but if they do not do it now, it will never fix the codes. All these guys (or any professional athlete) live for is to get to that stage. They would not say boo-to-a-goose if they knew that they couldn't get away with it. The precedence needs to be set, and set now. Simple. Look what it did for NYC... Court adjourned.

Good post Jamie. Working in a pub makes one hear some pretty awful victim blaming going on and complete ignorance to any issues surrounding rape and consent. Un-fucking-believable. NJ's past. There was a co-worker who did say she was bragging, i have a problem with people (not you, just in general) of people using this as a justification for 3 reasons.
1. Clare was approached by 4 corners, she was not paid for her interview, she got nothing out of it other than a chance for her to let ppl know whats going on and maybe a chance for her to get some healing out of it. Clare has been dismissed and disbelieved by a great number of people. The co-worker approached the media, she would have probably been given a monetary amount for her story, and the juicier the story, the more money she would have gotten. So Clare=disbelieved, and co-worker=believed no questions asked. Why is noone questioning her intentions?
2. Even if Clare had been bragging, perhaps this was a way for her to deny to herself that she had been abused. Often times abuse victims take days, months even years to come to terms with what has happened. Denial and Downplay are common traits among people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, any summary of the disorder will show this. And the psychs have made it clear that she is suffering from PTSD and is suicidal.
3. Even if the above 2 were questionable, and this girl did 'consent' and loved it which i in no way believe. If these players feel that one girl is up for it, what is going to stop them from thinking all of those girls that get drunk and flirt with them are not up for it.
Consent becomes highly problematic in a room full of very physically powerful men. I know if i was in the same position i would be questioning whether or not my safety was in danger if i was to say 'no' to 12 men in a room. And often in cases of sexual abuse and rape where there is no physical restraint, its the fear of violence that keeps many women and children from saying anything to their abuser.

"He said / she said" is VERY dangerous territory to get into. Also, the question of consent is relevant because whether or not she was a consenting part of the threesome, her "not expecting an audience" means she didn't consent to having said audience. The 'audience' was then in a position of power and she was in a position of fear and vulnerability; which is precisely what sexual assault revolves around.

thanks Katie. I just get so upset by things like this as i study this and hear about it so often that i don't even know what to do anymore. It's heart wrenching and disgusting and when i watched the 4 corners thing i just could not help breaking down. I don't know if my post helped or not, but thought i would add some knowledge about power dynamic and rape cases because its important to understand.
